It was decided at the beginning of last school year (2005-2006) that the Anime, NJA, Japanese Film and Sequential Art clubs might be logically merged into one large club. So was the birth of The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Media or Genshiken.
Genshiken(現視研) takes its name from a manga of the same name about a "Society for the Study of Modern Visual Media" at a fictional school. Genshiken is short for Gendai Shikaku Bunka Kenkyuukai (現代視覚文化研究会). There are at least three other REAL Genshiken clubs, in University of Tsukuba, Reitaku University, and Tokyo University.
So what exactly is Genshiken? The easiest way to explain that is to look at what Genshiken used to be. It was an anime club, it was also "Not-Just-Anime", it was film, it was Sequential Art. We also find ourselves dedicated to just about all fandoms and are affiliated with the DSOA Gaming Club.
